Overweight : Answering Your Critics

There are those that walk amongst us who have followed all the advice, diligently dieted and exercised with genuine effort for long periods of time, yet still fail to lose their excess weight.

Even more heartbreaking for those of us who genuinely struggle with obesity are the accusations of sloth and laziness from those thin people who eat junk all day long and show no physical sign of their own gluttony. “Why can’t you just be like everyone else?”, they demand. “It must be all your own fault.”

“After all,” they say in derisory voice, “Losing weight is easy. Just eat less and exercise more. If you don’t lose weight, you are just weak willed.”

Every person who has never had a real problem thinks they know all the easy answers. All those underlying unwarranted generalisations we face from others just about every day of our lives is a little recognised yet very real and severe form of discrimination, based on the same types of wrong thinking as prejudice against race, skin color, creed, gender, and other well recognised forms of hatred.

In fact, life experience has taught me that the less a person actually knows about obesity and weight loss, the more they think they know.

I spent time a few years ago under the care of some of the most distinguished and knowledgable internationally renowned Professors researching weight loss and obesity from the University of Sydney and the Royal Prince Albert Hospital’s Obesity Clinic in Sydney, Australia. I will always remember what Professor Ian Caterson told me one day:

“The more we learn about obesity, the more we realise how little we really understand and how much more there is to discover.”

Would any of those permanently thin critics care to explain a man with whom I shared many physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions during my time on the program at the Obesity Clinic? He was normal down the left side of his body, though obese down the right side of his body only.

Next time someone verbally berates you for carrying excess body weight and tries to tell you how easy it is to be lean & trim, try asking them what they would recommend to that man that some of the top obesity researchers in the world don’t yet know.

Then, while your critic is looking dumbfounded and fumbling for some feeble explanation, hit them with a few more questions, such as:

1: Why do large birth weight babies have a dramatically higher rate of obesity than normal birth weight babies?

2: And, given the above, just what control do you think I’ve got over my birth weight?

3: Do you know what your metabolic rate is? If not, why do you presume to think you know mine?

4: Do you think everyone has identical norepinephrine levels? Oh, you don’t even know what norepinephrine is, huh?

5: Why do some people gain weight during stressful times while other people loss weight, irrespective of their eating patterns?

6: How do you expect an overweight person to even be capable of greater physical activity than a normal weight person?

7: Name me five minerals (not vitamins) that are vital for hormonal function, and explain which of these hormones has a different effect on brain signals related to appetite and metabolism.

8: Tell me what you know about Insulin Resistance Syndrome, what causes it, what its symptoms are, and how to treat it.

9: What has the least nutrient value to the human body - (a) 100 calories of pure fat, (b) 100 calories of pure protein, or (c) 100 calories of pure carbohydrate? (By the way - Your critic will probably answer Fat. The correct answer is C. The human body actually requires fats and proteins for various metabolic and physiological functions. Pure carbohydrate has no known unique use in the human body as the body can convert either fats or proteins as required into blood glucose, as it does with carbohydrate.)

10: Some of the most successful business people, scientists, philosophers and artists in the course of human history have struggled with obesity. Why do you think such successful and influential people who have changed the course of the world as we know it today are “weak willed”?

When you see the jaw of your critic drop to the floor, as they turn pale and look like they’ve been hit by a runaway train, when their silence shows that their ignorance and prejudice has been thoroughly exposed, just calmly walk away.

At this point, both of you now know that, even though you may carrying excessive body weight, it is your critic who has the bigger problem.

Prevent Alzheimer’s : Play Scrabble

Playing Scrabble or other “thinking” board games is being shown by modern medical science to have many health benefits. No matter what your age, “brain sports” such as Scrabble have been proven to be of particular benefit for many aspects of human mental health.

At the simplest and most obvious end of the spectrum, the social aspects of Scrabble and other board games can be a preventative or even a treatment for loneliness, depression and social phobia.

At the other end of the spectrum, a study from the University of Southern California and published in the respected “Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences” shows that mentally stimulating recreational activities in early and middle adulthood is strongly associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s Disease in later life.

A similar study by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging in 2002 studied 700 dementia-free people aged 65 and older for a period of 4.5 years. It compared the level of active cognitive activities regularly performed by the study participants, such as card games, checkers, crossword puzzles, reading books and visiting museums. The NIH reached a conclusion that those with the highest levels of cognitive activities in their lifestyle had a 47% reduced risk of future Alzheimer’s disease than those who had the least levels of cognitive activities in the lifestyles.

A 2008 study by the University of NSW published in the renown journal “Public Library of Science” adds that, in addition to Alzheimer’s Disease, the onset of other degenerative brain diseases such as Huntington’s and Parkinson’s Diseases can also be delayed or prevented with these forms of mental activity. It found that a brain region known as the hippocampus, known to shrink with age and particularly with these three degenerative brain diseases, has only half the rate of shrinkage in people engaged in active mental tasks as in those with low levels of mental stimulation.

The evidence suggests a “Use it or Lose it” basis to human cognitive health.

If it is too late for prevention, research from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center that has been published in the “Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry” still has some encouraging news. They have demonstrated that computer and internet based mentally stimulating activities such as games can play a useful role alongside medication in improving the cognitive function of Alzheimer’s patients. That is another plus for Scrabble, the various internet versions of which have grown the game into one of the most popular online today.

Irrespective of Alzheimer’s Disease or other form of dementia, cognitive decline is a very common phenomena as we advance in years. Medical research teaches us clearly that keeping one’s brain active with puzzles, games, study and similar means are an effective method of slowing the rate of age-related cognitive decline. Furthermore, the earlier in life one begins to regularly participate in such active brain games and pursuits, the longer it takes before any cognitive decline even begins.

The lesson is clear. Play Scrabble and other brain-games regularly to enhance and maintain your overall mental health throughout life, and to help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of age-related cognitive decline in your later life.

Eight Natural Ways To Control Your Appetite

Be kind to yourself. Stay well away from the pharmaceutical shelves if you are seeking help to curb your appetite. (The corollary is that people who lack these endorphins due to insufficient exercise tend to boost their mood via “comfort food” instead.)

#2 : Drink more water, regularly. The human body craves hydration long before it craves food. Modern society and product marketing has ‘educated’ people into confusing thirst with hunger. Drinking water at regular intervals throughout the day will help to keep your appetite in check.

#3 : Avoid artificial sweeteners. Despite the well publicised fact of artificial sweeteners having no calories, they are the enemy of the dieter. Many studies in both human and animals have proven conclusively that these chemical sweeteners stimulate the appetite. Avoid them like the plague. Particularly do not drink diet sodas. Stick with water.

#4 : Spice & season your food. A recent study demonstrated that sprinkling common spices and seasonings such as herbs like oregano and others reduces the human appetite. The reasoning appears to be that the blander the food, the more a person tends to eat to feel satisfied. Herbal seasonings have next to no calories and enhance the flavour of your food, leading to earlier satiety.

#5 : Don’t miss breakfast. Skipping this most important meal of the day not only slows your metabolism, it results in snacking and binge eating later in the day.

#6 : Avoid sugars and starches. Eat proteins and non-starchy fibers. Other than the obvious calorie implications of sugars, sugars and starches are short-chain carbohydrates that are very rapidly converted into blood glucose, then very rapidly stored in muscle and fat tissue. This leads to rapid spikes and troughs, highs and lows, in your daily blood sugar levels and thus the urge to eat to treat those low points. Protein foods and high fiber non-starchy vegetables are more nutritious and take longer to fully digest - preventing those blood sugar spikes and troughs.

#7 : Eat slowly. After your first bite of food at a meal, it takes around twenty (20) minutes for the signal of satiety from your stomach to reach your brain. Make a habit of taking a bite, then putting down your cutlery while you thoroughly chew your food. Do not pick up your utensils again until you have completely chewed and swallowed what is in your mouth. Developing this habit gives your brain time to recognise what you have already consumed before you shover too much into your mouth. Eating slowly means that you will feel fuller on a lower food intake.

#8 : Develop healthy sleep patterns. Lack of sleep or disrupted sleeping patterns disturb several hormonal functions within your body, at least two of which lead to loss of appetite control. Additionally, most people tend to compensate for their feeling of a lack of energy caused by lack of sleep by overeating or drinking calories. A steady eight-plus hours of sleep per night will assist in controlling those hormonal appetite cravings during the day.
